Mosca, no me molesta!

So we went to Granada and Cordoba over the weekend, and it was completely exhausting, but I want to write about it while it's still fresh. So first we went to the Alhambra, which is, of course, beautiful. There are gardens and fountains everywhere, because (as we learned) the sound of the water was like constant music. The fountains aren't run by electricity either, just by gravity, as they were designed about 1000 years ago. They buildings were beautiful, although I was so busy taking pictures I wasn't really listening and I missed hearing which parts were reconstructions or originals.

After the Alhambra, we went into Granada, checked into our hotel, and found some lunch. We were slightly less dangerous than ravenous wolves at this point, but luckily there was an awesome little restaurant close to the hotel and I had REALLY good paella (I even ate a mini octopus in it). After lunch, we went to another cathedral (blerg.) and the crypt of Ferdinand, Isabella, Juana la Loca, and Phillip the Fair. It was a little eerie seeing their coffins, and kind of unexpectedly so. Then we were set loose again, to do what we wanted, although it was somewhat frantic because the shops were closing soon.

Though I reduced that to two paragraphs, it was enormously exhausting, and after having a glass of sangria, getting dressed and putting on makeup to go out, I fell asleep. I make the party, obvs. But it's okay. We got up early (Borges gave all of us a 7 AM wake up call...not cute), and had breakfast at the hotel. In the US, I wouldn't have been so impressed. But there was milk at breakfast. It was like first time I'd had milk since leaving the US....and it was so good. Plus I stole 3 kiwis and 3 croissants for later (In the US, we ask for doggie bags and steal food from places like hotels where we feel entitled...they think it's disgusting in Europe. They never take food to go like that).

So then there was a 3 hour drive to Cordoba...and I should probably just say that I don't take in the scenery on these rides. I sleep, hardcore. Or I have epic battles with flies. Seriously, this fly pestered me all weekend, it was absurd. But mostly I sleep. So when I woke up, we were at these Muslim ruins. They were all right, but the coolest part was closed while we were there. They had a lot of fruit trees that apparently grow hallucinogenic fruit. And the gardens were covered in fragments of the buildings that they are puzzling back together.

After that we went into the city of Cordoba...and at least the part we were in was much more quaint than Granada or Malaga. There's a huge Mezquita (Mosque)/Cathedral that's absolutely beautiful. I was way too tired to listen at this point though, so I have no idea what the history of the place is. But it was pretty sweet. As for souvenirs, I made a decision. While I'm really drawn to all the tourist-y stuff, like the inlaid boxes, the scarves, the jewelry, the shinies in general—I'm buying art. Like, sketches and water colors. It's more expensive than buying smaller things, but I think future-me will appreciate it more. They're really pretty, I'll probably post pictures of them somewhere (I only have one from Granada and one from Cordoba so far, though they're both of the Alhambra).

So, in four days I leave for London. Craaaazy. I have to get myself together this week and organize for reals.

  1. There's an Eddie Izzard sketch about doggie bags... "We think that's absolutely vile, we're like, you're gonna take that home? You gonne eat it later?! EUGHHHH... can you just throw mine up against a wall somewhere?"
